Problem? with proxmark3 windows client

Hi all,

I just purchased a proxmark3 and am trying to get it working on Windows7 (virtual machine in VMWare Fusion (Mac)).

I downloaded the compiled binaries (version pm2-bin-0.0.2) and installed the driver (CDC). Proxmark shows up as COM3 in Windows device manager.

When I use the GUI (proxmark-tool), all seems to be working OK. I can send commands to the Proxmark and get a response. I also read a couple of different mifare cards and all seems to be OK.

However, when I try to use the command line interface (proxmark3.exe), I do not get any response from the Proxmark. I do think that the software does correctly connect to the proxmark, because I do not get any error-messages when I enter commands (I tried the same without the proxmark connected, and in these cases I do get an error message when I try to execute a command). Whatever command I try to send to the proxmark, I always only get the proxmark3> prompt, but no output from the proxmark.

Since the GUI seems to be working OK, I assume that the hardware is fine and the problem is somewhere in the communication of proxmark.exe with the proxmark board. Any ideas what might be going wrong?

Many thanks in advance!

Best Regards,
Rob

Re: Problem? with proxmark3 windows client

Proxmark executable needs com port parameter; simply running proxmark.exe without the port number parameter won't work.

Re: Problem? with proxmark3 windows client

Thanks for the replies!

I guess my question was not accurate enough: I did start the program with com3 as parameter.
Any ideas?

Regards Rob

Re: Problem? with proxmark3 windows client

Have you tried running the proxmark3.exe that is in the GUI folder from the command line? And have you tried it from an elevated command prompt?

Re: Problem? with proxmark3 windows client

Yes, tried all that. One time I managed to enter one single command (hw tune) and get a reply, but after that one occasion, I wasn't able to reproduce that.
proxmark-tool seems to be working fine all the time though. (and no, I didn't run proxmark-tool and the proxmark command line tool at the same time ;-) )
I will try on a physical machine later today, maybe it has to do with VMWare?
Just to illustrate the issue, I have attached some screenshots:

Proxmark shows up as COM3 in device manager:

Trying to use proxmark command line:

Using the proxmark tool:

Hope someone has ideas to solve this, because I prefer the command line over the GUI :-P

Thanks again. Rob

Re: Problem? with proxmark3 windows client

Maybe this is a stupid solution but try to run proxmark.exe from c:\folder_and_path_without_spaces_in_name and let us know the result.

Re: Problem? with proxmark3 windows client

Hi Asper,
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately it didn't solve the issue. Tried to run it from folder c:\pm3, but still have the same issues.

I did install the client software on a physical Win7 box though, and everything works fine on that machine.

So I guess it must have something to do with VMWare Fusion on OSX.

Re: Problem? with proxmark3 windows client

I run my pm3's on a vmware image (win7 pro). I needed to install the drivers on the host first then on the virtual and "connect" the usb-device from the vmware "removable devices" meny
