Mifare 1K and 4K

Hello gents,

By theory i can write uid and block 0 of 4k card on 1k card where no data on other blocks on 4k card .. would that work as a clone with a reader?

Just a bet between me and friend and hoping someone who tried to confirm it ..

Thanks

Re: Mifare 1K and 4K

As far as I know, every specific Tag-Solution may use its own technique for access. The following example is not regarding Mifar, but some cards deny writing or reading, before another sector is set to contain zeros or a certain code.
Regarding Mifare cards:
It is possible the reader checks if for example block 64 has only zeros or something else written there before granting access or entry to for example a building. If the Mifare Card does not return the 'zeroes' contained in block 64, then the reader might block access (Mifare 1k has only blocks 0-63). Returning 'zeros' and returning nothing or an error message is a difference.

All in all it depends on wether the reader is checking the presence and contents of the other sectors or not, which depends on implementation.
I dont know if the Mifare4k has a different set of communication commands, so maybe they are not exchangable at all (Im not that far into RFID yet).
Maybe someone else on the forum would be better suited to answer that question.

Re: Mifare 1K and 4K

By theory, yes and no.

We tried to clone 4k cards with no data blocks into 1k cards and they work really well on properties in Singapore.

Like what Skeltek said. The reader is the factor most times.

I would give an 80% yes and 20% no.

Even for Ving systems for the hotel lock systems, their 1k and 4k are almost interchangeable by default. As long as the OTP works for the initial blocks, both are workable.

Hope this answers your question and hope you won your bet

Re: Mifare 1K and 4K

Thank you all for your input, it confirms that it is what about reader checks, that said they upgraded cards from 1k to 4k recently and they didn't change readers .. it will be mostly yes.. will get it tested by this week and will update you smile

Re: Mifare 1K and 4K

Reader wins .. didn't work .. reader checks for higher block counts that 4k have that 1k doesn't.
